INTRODUCTION
   

(a)  The Indian Navy, as one of the three wings of Indian Armed Forces has kept pace with ever changing advanced technologies and operates and maintains highly sophisticated ships, submarines and aircraft. The propulsion machinery, weapons, sensors and equipment on board these weapon platforms are operated and maintained by sailors, who are imparted with requisite training at various intervals during their service.

(b) The initial basic training is given at INS Chilka, Distt-Khurda, Orissa. This is followed by further training at various Naval Establishments all over the country. Selected sailors are also sent abroad for training in specific disciplines. Prior to release from service sailors are also given pre-release courses to enable them to settle down in civil life. Sailors in the Navy are liable to serve anywhere in India, on board ships and Submarines or abroad as deemed necessary by higher authorities.

   
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT RECRUITMENT CONDUCTED AT INS VALSURA
   

INS Valsura functions as a Naval Recruitment Establishment (NRE) for Gujarat. The Education Department coordinates all activities in respect of recruitment of sailors for :-
-Senior Secondary Recruits (SSR)

-Artificer Apprentices (AA)

-Direct Entry Diploma Holders (DEDH)

   
PAY AND PERQUISITES
   

(a) During the initial training period the approximate emoluments are as follows:- DE(DH)- Rs.6300 pm, AA- Rs.6192 pm, SSR- Rs.4500 pm

(b) On completion of initial training depending on Rank and number of years of service approximate emoluments at present rate will be:- DE(DH) - Rs.7400 to Rs.16,900 pm; AA - Rs.8030 to Rs.19,737 pm; SSRs - Rs.5300 to Rs.16,000 pm. Promotion prospects exist upto the rank of Master Chief Petty officer(equivalent to Subedar Major of Indian Army).

(c) During the entire period of training and thereafter, sailors are given books, reading material, uniform, food and accommodation etc free of cost. On completion of each phase of training sailors get annual leave on free railway warrant. Sailors are entitled to medical treatment and Leave Travel Concession for self and dependents, Group Housing benefits, and other privileges at Government expense. Insurance cover of Rs. 7,50,000 is given by IHQ MOD (Navy) at a nominal premium of Rs.750 per month. Sailors also have the privilege to avail up to 60 days Annual Leave and 30 days Casual leave every year. Other benefits include pension after completion of requisite service, gratuity and Accumulated Leave encashment Post retirement. Children education fee and house rent allowances are also admissible.

(d) Opportunities for promotion to the rank of a Commissioned Officer - Several avenues exist for the sailors of Indian Navy to gain the commissioned rank. However, this would entirely depend on the performance of the sailor and on his clearing of prescribed examinations within the age limit as promulgated from time to time.

   
TRAINING AND INITIAL ENGAGEMENT
   

Training - The training for all courses generally commences as per following schedule:-

(a) DE(DH) - 09 weeks Basic Training at INS Chilka followed by 4 weeks of sea training and 80 weeks of technical training.

(b) AA - 09 weeks Basic Training at INS Chilka followed by 08 weeks sea training . Thereafter four years training in technical training establishments of the Navy. On completion, candidates will have qualification equivalent to Diploma in Electrical/Mechanical/Aeronautical Engineering which is recognised by the Govt of India for purposes of employment in Central /State Govt.

(c) SSR - 24 weeks Basic Training at INS Chilka followed by 24 weeks professional training in the allotted trade in Naval Establishments all over the country. Branch/Trade will be allocated as per requirement of service.

   

Initial Engagement . The beginning of engagement of sailor with the Indian Navy is subject to successful completion of training. The period of the initial engagement of the sailor is given below. However, engagement (ie service) period is extendable with maximum limit being till the attainment of 57 yrs of age, which, in turn, depends on the rank attained and satisfactory performance by the sailor while in the service.

Initial engagement period : DE(DH) - 10 Yrs, AA - 20 Yrs, SSR, MR, MUS, NMR - 15 Yrs

Discharge As Unsuitable. Trainees are liable to be discharged as UNSUITABLE due to unsatisfactory performance at any time during training.

   
HOW TO APPLY
   
Recruitment Advertisements. Advertisements for recruitment of SSRs , Artificer Apprentices (AA) and Direct Entry Diploma Holders (DEDH) will be advertised in the Employment News and all leading National/Regional Newspapers in Dec/Jan and Jun/Jul every year.
   
Application Form - The application form is published in the important Newspapers which may be used. Alternately, the form in the prescribed format may be typed on plain paper. Candidates applying for more than one type of entry are required to submit separate applications. However, only one application form is to be filled for a particular entry. Choice of entry is to be clearly indicated on the application form. Application sent through agent will not be accepted. Candidates applying for DE(DH) entry are to clearly indicate in their application the Branch/Trade (Electrical, Electronics and Mechanical) they are applying. The choice should be as per their specialisation in three year Diploma Course.
   

Documents:- The following documents are to be punched and tied firmly with a strong thread to the application in the sequence as given below:-

(a) Two spare recent Passport size photos with the candidate's name written on the reverse (In the absence of recent photograph candidate will not be allowed to appear in the examination).

(b) Application is to be filled in capital letters with one recent PP size photograph pasted at the right top corner.

(c) Attested copy (by Gazetted officer only, indicating name, designation and phone Numbers below signature) of matric /equivalent certificate for verification of date of birth.

(d) Attested copy (by Gazetted officer only, indicating name, designation and phone Numbers below signature) of mark sheet of Diploma/Higher Board examination/Matriculation , as applicable.

(e) Attested copy (by Gazetted officer only, indicating name, designation and phone Numbers below signature) of certificate indicating computer knowledge achieved, if any.

(f) Attested copy (by Gazetted officer only, indicating name, designation and phone Numbers below signature) of other certificates viz NCC/Sports/etc.

(g) Attested copy (by Gazetted officer only, indicating his name, designation and phone Numbers below signature) of Domicile certificates.

(h) Two self addressed envelopes of size 22 x 10 cms with Rs 10/- stamp affixed on one envelope and one blank envelope without stamp is to be submitted alongwith the application form. On top of the envelope containing the application the Type of Entry and choice of examination Centre is to be clearly written.

WARNING : Candidates who send more than one application for the same entry or apply for more than one examination centre will be disqualified.
   
Applications For AA & SSR
All applications for AA and SSR are to be addressed to the authority promulgated. The application forms will be available on this site from the date of advertisement for the respective batch and type of entry.

(a) INS Valsura is an Examination centre for the state of Gujarat. Presently, there are 34 examination centers across the country where the Indian Navy conducts recruitment for enrolling sailor recruits. These centers are as listed below

(b) Candidates are permitted to appear for examination at Jamnagar centre in accordance with the domicile certificate issued by the District level Gujarat Government authorities. However, for administrative reasons and to give advantage to the aspirants, the scope of recruitment is made wider by accommodating more applicants, who are then allotted any suitable centre other than candidates state of domicile by IHQ MOD(Navy).
   
SELECTION PROCEDURE
   

(a)  Applications are received through Ordinary Post only and no other mode       of despatch is acceptable.

(b)  Eligible shortlisted candidates are sent Call-Up letters, indicating date,        time and place for examination as scheduled.

(c) Results of the Written Test are generally declared on the same day.

(d) Those who qualify Written Test are permitted to undergo PFT and only those       who qualify PFT are taken for Medical Examination. This whole process is       generally completed on the same day but may also take 3-4 days time       depending on the service requirements or due to external unknown factors       which may crop up un-announced.

(e) Those who are declared Medically Temporary Unfit will be required to report       to the specified Military Hospital within a maximum period of 21 days for       review from the date of initial recruiting medical examination.

(f)  Those who are declared medically unfit can appeal for specialist opinion in a       Military Hospital on payment of Rs.40 by Military Receivable Order (MRO) in       the Government Treasury within 21 days. Medical fitness certificate from       other than the specified Military Hospital will NOT be considered .

(g) An All India Merit List of all those candidates who are qualified in all respects       will be prepared at IHQ MOD (Navy), New Delhi depending upon the       numbers to be inducted. Out of this list the centre wise select list of       candidates will be displayed in the respective Recruitment Centres.       However, final enrolment will be subject to medical fitness at INS Chilka

(h) 
All DE(DH) candidates whose names appear in the Select List and have been       declared medically fit will be required to appear in an interview to be held by       a Board of officers at INS Chilka. Candidates finally selected will be enrolled       at INS Chilka.

(j) All AA and SSR, MR, MUS, NMR candidates whose names appear in the Select      List and have been declared medically fit will be required to report to INS      Chilka(Orissa) on the specified date. Sleeper class rail/bus fare will be      reimbursed on production of the ticket/receipt on reporting at INS Chilka.

(k) All India Merit List pertaining to the advertised batch is valid ONLY for the      advertised batch. Qualified candidates whose names do not appear in the      final merit list cannot claim admission for the next batch. These candidates      will have to undergo the selection procedure afresh provided they meet the      eligibility criteria for the fresh batch.

(l) Sports Quota - Outstanding Sportsmen who have participated at      International/ National/State level should send applications to the Secretary,      Indian Navy Sports Control Board, Room No.08, `C' Wing, IHQ MOD (Navy),      Sena Bhavan, New Delhi-110 011, on the specified date. The candidates are      to qualify in the sports trials in addition to Physical Fitness Test, Written      examination and Medical.

   
Final Enrolment Medical Examination: All select list candidates who are issued with a call letter for Final Medical examination will have to undergo a Final Enrolment Medical examination at INS Chilka prior to enrolment. Candidates found “UNFIT” during this medical examination will not be enrolled for training. No “appeal” is permitted for review after the final enrolment Medical Examination at INS Chilka.
   
WRITTEN , PHYSICAL & MEDICAL EXAMINATION
   
Recruits will be inducted on the basis of a `All India Merit List' drawn after a Written Test, Physical Fitness Test (PFT) and Medical examination. Direct Entry Diploma Holders will, in addition, be interviewed prior to enrolment at INS Chilka.
   
Written Test The question paper is bilingual (Hindi & English) and of objective type. The question paper contains questions from English, General Knowledge, Science and Mathematics for SSR, MR, MUS & DE(DH) branches. The standard of question paper will be that of Matric for MR, MUS & DE(DH) and 10+2 for SSR. The question paper of DE(DH) will have sections of Electronics, Electrical and Mechanical in place of Science section applicable other entries. A DE(DH) candidate will be required to attempt only one of the section which will be as per the choice of the Branch/Trade indicated by the candidate in his application. This Branch/Trade will also be indicated in the call up letter issued by NHQ to the candidate viz. K for Mechanical, E for Electronics & L for Electrical. Duration of question paper will be one hour for SSR, MR & AA entries, 45 minutes for NMR entry and 90 minutes for DE(DH) entry.
   
Physical Standards - The candidate should be physically fit for enrolement into Indian Navy. This capability is tested at the examination venue on qualifying in written examination and is termed as Physical Fitness Test (PFT). Qualifying in Physical Fitness Test is mandatory. PFT will consist of 1.6 km run which is to be completed in 07 minutes, 20 Squats (Utthak Baithak) and 10 Push ups.
   

(a) Medical examination will be conducted by authorized Military Doctors as per medical standard prescribed under current regulations applicable to the sailors of Indian Navy on entry. The detailed guidelines for medical standards are laid down in the Navy Orders (SPL) 01/1999 by IHQ MOD (Navy).

(b) Physical traits include minimum height of 157 cm with proportionate body weight depending on the age and height of the candidate. He should also have proportionate chest with minimum expansion capability of 05 cms.

(c) Candidate should possess good mental and physical health, should be free from any disease / disability and have no cardio vascular disease, surgical deformities like Knock-Knees, Flat-Foot. Candidate should not have a past history of fits or psychiatric ailments Vericose-vein etc. He should not have any type of infection in the ears. Candidates are advised to get their ears cleaned for wax and tartar removed from teeth before appearing for the written test followed by PFT and Medical examination.

(d) Candidate should possess Colour perception standard of CP II and Eyes Visual standards should meet the under mentioned prescribed standards for both the conditions that is with glasses AND without glasses.
